Join the Waring Library Society

The Waring Library Society is a "friends of the library" group founded in 1979 to support the mission of the library, specifically developing the collections, raising funds for the Library’s endowment, promoting membership and perpetuating interest in the history of the health sciences.

The Society sponsors two lectures per year, the Warren A. Sawyer lecture usually held in the fall, and the Joseph I. Waring, Jr. lecture usually held at the Annual Meeting in the spring. These events are open to the public and feature speakers who are prominent in their fields. The Society also sponsors the Student Medical History Club. This student group meets monthly at noon for lunch and a brief informal talk on some aspect of medical history. It is open to students in all six colleges.

Volunteer Opportunities

The Waring Historical Library welcomes volunteers who can provide administrative, library, and curatorial assistance. In recent years, student interns and volunteers have worked on archival processing project, developing physical and online exhibits, digitization and scanning projects, photograph identification, rare book inventories, and the transcription thousands of pages of inaugural theses written by Medical College students between 1825 and 1860.

Please contact the curator for information about opportunities to share your talents with the Waring. College students may be eligible for college credit for internships or volunteer service at the library.

Donation of Materials

The Waring Historical Library welcomes donations of material and monetary support. Please contact the library before bringing any materials to the library so we can discuss your gift and its appropriateness for our collection.

The library is interested in collecting the personal papers, archival records, photographs, biographical information and artifacts relating to people and/or organizations engaged in the health sciences in South Carolina. These may include the papers of health professionals in all disciplines, including medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, and more.

If you are interested in donating books, we ask that you send a list of the books (author, title, publication date) to the curator for review against our current holdings. If you are interested in donating artifacts please contact the curator with a description of the item for consideration.

Donors will be asked to sign a Deed of Gift acknowledging the transfer of the property and rights thereto to the Waring Library Society.

Due to preservation and security issues gifts of books and donated artifacts cannot be considered for permanent exhibition.

The library cannot accept gifts of books and donated artifacts with restrictions.

Please contact the Waring Historical Library for details about the library's collecting policy link and gift agreements link.
