Belle Yoe

Belle Yoe was born in Russellville, Tennessee on December 13, 1859. Her father Benjamin Franklin, a Confederate veteran, and mother, Mary Elizabeth Jackson, moved the family to Greenwood, SC, soon after the end of the Civil War. After graduating from Columbia Female College, Miss Yoe worked as a governess for a family in Winnsboro, SC. In 1884 she enrolled as a student in the School of Nursing and graduated in 1886 in the first class of eight nurses. Miss Yoe practiced her profession as a trained nurse in Charleston and then in New York City where she lived for several years. She returned to Greenwood about 1895. She died on April 6, 1951 at the age of 91.
