Scientific Name: Euphorbia ipecacuanhae L.

Family: Euphorbiaceae (Spurge Family)

Common name: Carolina Ipecac

Description: Perennial herb with a deep taproot many feet long, branched near the top into many stems with only the tips above ground; above- ground stems forming low, dark green tufts or small mats; flowers March-May.

Range and Habitat: Common in South Carolina in the sand hills and inner coastal plain.

In Porcher’s time… Carolina ipecac was used as a substitute for imported ipecac. It was an emetic, liable sometimes to produce excessive nausea.
