Common name: Osage Orange

Description: Osage Orange is a deciduous tree. It can grow between 30 and 50 feet tall. This tree produces a large fruit between 3-6 inches in diameter with bumpy, rough skin. The fruits are yellow-green and secrete a sticky white latex if cut.

Range and Habitat: Osage Orange is native to South-central United States. This tree prefers full sun. Zones 4-9

In Porcher’s time… Osage Orange was used as a hedge for gardens and homes. Its sharp thorns were a deterrent for people and animals. The hedges were "universally admired and commended, and it is confidently believed by the best judges that it will double the real value of any farm it surrounds."
