The Memorial (City) Hospital was built on the former Jonathan Lucas property north of Calhoun Street in 1887-88 to replace the earthquake-damaged Roper Hospital. After several years of squabbling between the Roper Trustees and the City of Charleston Council, this building was acquired by the Trustees, partially demolished in 1904, and rebuilt as a new Roper Hospital.
