From its inception, the Medical University of South Carolina has remained at the forefront of American medical innovation. From the observational experimentation of country physicians, to the almost constant battle for resources in the post-Civil War South, all the way to the rapidly evolving science of the twenty-first century; innovators associated with MUSC have consistently contributed to the field of medicine. Some of these innovations revolutionized the way that medicine was practiced. Some created ethical dilemmas that are still being discussed today. Certain innovations were not revolutionary in and of themselves, but led to later important discoveries. All have contributed to the history of American medicine. This exhibit explores the innovation and innovators of MUSC, beginning in the mid-nineteenth century and stretching into the twenty-first.
