The Medical College of the State of South Carolina, lead by Dean Robert Wilson, rose to the challenge presented in the Flexner Report. Dean Wilson deftly worked with Governor Blease to secure the survival of the school and ensured its subsequent status as one of the nation’s premier medical schools. Without the foresight and commitment of Wilson, the backing of Blease, and the support of Colwell, the Medical College may have been one of the many schools that shuttered its doors and been a footnote in the history of medicine.
