The Construction of the 1955 Medical College Hospital

Medical College Hospital Opens

The Medical College Hospital was dedicated on May 10, 1955. In his dedicatory address, South Carolina governor, George Bell Timmerman, Jr., declared, “It is my sincere hope that this new hospital will provide tangible results in more and improved medical services within our state.”

The teaching hospital was built at a cost of $11 million dollars or approximately $98 million in 2015 dollars.

The new 10-floor, 465-bed Medical College Hospital accepted its first patients on September 26, 1955.
