Alumni who served in the Confederacy
On March 8, 1861, the Medical College graduated 93 students. Alumni and students
joined the Confederacy in large numbers, with many of them as privates or line
officers rather than in medical capacities. Six of the nine members of the faculty
of 1861 entered the medical corps. In total, 139 are known to have served in the
Confederacy during the Civil War.
If you have photographs, biographies or information on any of these individuals that
you would be willing to share with the library for future research use, or if you notice an error or omission in the alumni list, please contact
Brooke Fox, MUSC University Archivist.
