In 2001 Dr. Edward L. Welsh retired from the James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine, where he was a full professor and professor emeritus in the Department of Operative Dentistry. He was born August 19, 1934 in Homestead, Pennsylvania. He earned his DDS from Temple University in 1959, after which he entered the Air Force as a dental officer; he retired with the rank of colonel. In 1963 he opened general dental practices in Mount Pleasant and Charleston. When he joined the Medical University faculty in 1974 the Macaulay Museum of Dental History was close to opening. Since that time Dr. Welsh has been active in the history of dental medicine, serving as the principal consultant to and advocate for this museum. He has donated significant artifacts and printed works to the museum, in addition to lending his technical skills to rehabilitating equipment and providing historical information and context to the objects in the collection.
